One worker died, another was injured in a pipe collapse at Cenovus Energy’s Christina Lake site


Alberta oil and gas operator Cenovus Energy Inc. says a worker was killed and another was injured last weekend at a site in northeastern Alberta.

The Calgary-based company said it was hired by a third-party contractor at its Christina Lake North location south of Fort McMurray, east of Highway 881 near Conklin.

Alberta Occupational Health and Safety said workers were struck by pipes that rolled off a truck they were unloading.

Work immediately stopped in the area of ​​the incident, but operations at Christina Lake North continued.

This is the second death in recent weeks in the oilsands region; a contractor at Suncor Energy Inc.’s Fort Hills oil and gas mine. died when the heavy equipment they were operating sank into the muskeg.

The province is investigating workplace deaths in Christina Lake and Fort Hills.

Cenovus said Monday it was cooperating with authorities.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident and extend our deepest sympathies to their families, friends and colleagues,” the company said in a written statement.
