More tornadoes were recorded in the Canadian Prairies amid a humid heatwave


The Canadian Prairies experienced more extreme weather Saturday night when a tornado touched down near the Alberta-Saskatchewan border.

A red tornado warning was issued by Environment Canada around 5:30 p.m. for the Vermilion River Region. It was canceled about 30 minutes later.

The tornado was the 24th reported in Alberta so far this year – an increase of more than 50 per cent compared to 2025.

Images captured by Global News viewers showed the tornado touching down in the Tulliby Lake area, 60 kilometers northwest of Lloydminster, Alta.

Farther east, Manitoba also had a warning of thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes on Saturday night. Environment Canada has warned that the storm could also produce damaging winds, large hail and locally heavy rainfall.

On Friday, the heat caused a record-breaking 10 tornadoes in Saskatchewan.


“We had 10 tornado reports in Saskatchewan yesterday,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Kayla Bilous in an interview with Global News on July 11.

The tornado developed as a prolonged heat event occurred in southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba, where heat warnings remained in effect.

The agency issued a heat warning for much of southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba, with a level orange warning in parts of southeastern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba where humidex values ​​were expected to reach the mid-40s.
