A particular intersection in West Regina is seeing some traffic safety improvements after years of being considered the most accident-prone intersection in the city.
The intersection of Dewdney Avenue and Lewvan Drive sees an average of 38 crashes per year, measured over three years. Since 2010, there have been at least 600 crash reports.
The City of Regina is working with SGI to collect and track safety data at the intersection. With the highest traffic levels in the city, the City of Regina submitted a Request for Proposals (RFP) to improve the intersection.

“We started the planning process years ago for this project. We had designed this project to add a double protected left turn lane,” said Chris Warren, director of highways and transportation for the City of Regina.
Warren said safety improvements at intersections will also include improved lighting for pedestrians, as well as improved signaling and accessibility. This work is expected to take one year to complete.
While infrastructure improvements will improve safety, drivers also play a role. City officials remind motorists to avoid distracted driving, pay attention to pedestrians and other vehicles while driving, and stay alert to avoid collisions.
