Evacuations are ordered in a fast-moving wildfire on Colorado’s Eastern Plains

A fast-moving brush fire forced evacuations for people living near Matheson on Colorado’s Eastern Plains on Tuesday afternoon, according to Elbert County officials.

Simla firefighters ordered evacuations between Elbert County Road 75 and US 24 and from Elbert County Road 169 to County Road 185, county spokeswoman Wendy Holmes said.

County officials were still working to determine the extent of the fire and multiple agencies were responding to the area, including a strike team from Douglas County, Holmes said.

Much of the Eastern Plains is under a high wind warning, according to the National Weather Service, with possible wind gusts of up to 100 km/h.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
