2 men allegedly seen hand feeding a grizzly bear in Smithers BC

The BC Conservation Officer Service is looking to identify two men allegedly seen feeding grizzly bears in Smithers over the weekend.

In an online statement, Conservation officials said there was video on social media showing two men allegedly feeding a grizzly. A man can be seen feeding carrots to the bear from inside the vehicle, and in another video, a man is outside the vehicle trying to feed the bear an apple, according to Conservation officials.

A second grizzly bear is also visible in the background.

The incident is believed to have occurred in the Hudson Bay Road area.

“Feeding dangerous wildlife is not only illegal, it is an extremely risky activity for both human and bear safety,” Conservation Officer Cody Cyr said in a statement.

“These people could have been seriously injured, or worse. Feeding bears does not help them. Feeding bears poses a public safety risk by conditioning the animals to human food and presence.”
