The federal government is setting aside $660 million over the next five years for national sports organizations that have faced growing deficits for years.
Tuesday’s spring economic update promised $110 million a year after that to increase funding for national sports organizations that have remained largely static for two decades.
Following this year’s Games in Milano-Cortina, which saw Canada’s weakest Winter Olympic medal tally since 2002, the Canadian Olympic Committee issued an urgent plea for increased funding.

The Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Committee unsuccessfully lobbied for a $144 million annual core funding increase for national sports organizations in the 2025 budget.
Ottawa has indicated that it wants national sports organizations to spread the new funding across all levels of sport and not set aside funds only for high-level athletes in international competition.
Ottawa also said the funding is intended to build a strong and safe sports system, following a call from the Commission on the Future of Sport in Canada for funding to allow all national sports organizations to employ their own safe sports officers.
